by Shannon Tercheria
Cameron Alexander Tercheria, the second of hopefully many children, was born on
November 27, 2000.
It was love at first site. Shortly after birth, his Hypoplastic Left Heart was
discovered.
Currently, he has had 3 open heart surgeries, and 9 cardiac caths. He is doing
fantastic.
We are passionate about CHD awareness for a couple of reasons. If our discharge nurse was not so in-tune to Cameron's very subtle murmer upon his final discharge 'workup', we would have been sent home, not knowing something was terribly wrong with our seemingly perfect child, and therefore, may not have him to cherish today; and the daily frustration with nurses, pediatricians, and the general public, who we encounter everywhere, every day, who do not understand what HLHS, and other CHD's are... and who, when seeing Cameron's 'zipper' scar above his collar-line, ask if he has a 'hole in his heart', and then look at us with pity in their eyes when and if we tell them what really lies beneath that tidy scar. It is alarming, that with the great strides being made every year, or even every day, that seemingly only the "Cardiology" community ever knows about them... and they are the people we see the least!
