Justin Lee Shelnutt
Quilt #7, row 4, square 1

In those endless nights after Justin lost his battle with HLHS, I scoured the internet for kindred grieving spirits, ways to memorialize my son and his struggle with CHD, a place to celebrate the warriors that still travel that same stretch of road... I found all of that and more with the CHD quilt project. At the time I made my request, I hadn't come through the pain enough to think of any specialized requests; I was grateful just to find the project. When the picture of his completed block finally arrived in my inbox, I was surprised at how perfect it is. I have to smile when I think of how Justin's square found it's way into quilt #7 since 7 has always been "my number." And the fabric! It just seems such a perfect illustration of what I wrote about my little prize fighter shortly after he died: "Justin Lee was a precious, precious gift. He was a shooting star, a fleeting eclipse, a brilliant once in a lifetime phenomenon. And I was there. I was given 11 weeks with an angel & he's forever in my heart... My "angel-fire" has gone to God, but his light burns on forever..."
